Review:

Scene 2 - other=cum swap
Scene 4 - other=orgy and cum swap
Scene 5 - other=bonus scene

While there's no music and not much of a set, there's plenty of action in A Group Thing. As you may have guessed from the title, group sex is the theme in this gonzo genre flick.

If you look at the behind the scenes footage on the DVD, you get a glimpse of how the scenes are intended to be shot. There's only the one camera going. The participants are directed to continue with their sex even when they're not in view, because the camera will be panning between the different groups of partners. This is intended to make a more effective and flowing scene and require less editing points. In addition, we can hear those that are off screen for the moment, and when we pan back to them, there's no loss of continuity.

This method of producing the movie seems to work well. The scenes do have a few cuts in them, but there are not huge gaps in the marathon action that break things up badly. For a single-camera operation with little editing, long scenes, no planned close-ups, and totally shot from the hip, I really like the camerawork. The audio is fine through the whole movie, with the possible caveat that with multiple sex acts happening at once, there's moaning and squealing that sometimes covers up what someone is saying.

Scenes 1 and 2 as listed in the Sex Index© are actually one big scene, with Vince stepping out to film the action from a distance and the two studs stepping in to continue with Austin O'Riley and Faith, both of which are extremely hot.

Skipping ahead for the moment, Scene 4 is the real full-blown orgy scene of the movie with everybody pairing up everybody else. Eventually all three girls take on anal and DP action (Juliana Kincaid's first DP). The scene ends with a cum swap between all three girls, repeated three times for each guy. This isn't couple's stuff here-we're talking about some serious hardcore porn. Melanie Jagger, who graces the box cover, and Ashley Long, who does a little bit of overacting, show their experience. Juliana gives the impression of being the more youthful sweet thing, even though she has a plethora of porn credits.

As for Scene 3 with Rose Petal, I can't say anything good about it. It is horribly over-directed by the actors who constantly tell Rose what to do and say. It's sex-but it's not sexy. The editing, even though there is little of it, is poor. Rose Petal doesn't impress me at all in this scene. She keeps a smile on her face pretty well, and manages to keep the banal chitchat going, but she strikes me as being phony. She fails to produce a feeling of enjoyment or arousal at all. There's no chemistry between the partners. This scene should have been cut out and reattempted with different performers, or barring that, left out of the movie completely.

Aside from Rose Petal's scene, the rest of sex in this movie is hot stuff and definitely worth seeing. Realize that you're not getting any of the frills of a high-end production, like a plot, music, or even a partially crafted set. However, you won't be wasting much time on the fast-forward button here, especially if you like group action.

The DVD extras include numerous Red Light District movie trailers, a still photo gallery, behind-the-scenes footage (definitely worth watching), and a short bonus scene with Austin O'Riley and Vince Vouyer.

I considered giving this movie an overall rating of 3 because of my disappointment with Rose Petal, but a 4 is really appropriate here because the rest of the movie more than makes up for it.
