Review:

Scene 4-Other=incest

Mickey G. is a troubled man. Troubled by the image of his overbearing grandmother, his physical handicap and his regrets of a life that wasn't what he wanted. He's haunted by his lost loves, rejections and his love for his grandmother. We get to learn all about Mickey through a session with his therapist as he relives all his torments.

If your looking for a simple little fuck flick to while away the time, this ain't it. Zupko's romp through Mickey's depressing life is thoughtful, well directed and riveting...but it's not porn. Yes, there's sex, very graphic sex, but that's not what this film is about. This is a thought-provoking journey into the mind of a very troubled man and, as we all know, it's going to include sex.

Zupko serves up his usual shock treatment with an abortion scene, a rape scene, incest with granny and a very disturbing scene with three girls attached by umbilical cords to a crucified Veronica Caine. There's also plenty of gore and body paint. These over-the-edge scenes actually add to the movie and are played very successfully and with more control than I would expect from a Zupko film. The editing is superior, a nice mix of black and white, slow motion, grainy film and crystal clear shots. The effect is to put you into the mind of the man. The ranting and raving that I've come to expect from Zupko is missing, replaced by tight coherent dialogue that carries the story along. The special effects are pretty good and the make-up serves it's purpose.

Though it's hard to visualize Veronica as a grandmother she pulls it off fairly well and gives a convincing portrayal of her character. Mickey G. gives a splendid performance as the hero/victim of the tale, showing that he's not just a stud but an accomplished actor.

I found myself watching Shades of Hades again and again but it wasn't to watch the sex, it was to watch the story. In fact, I'd fast-forward through the parts of the sex scenes. Zupko may have arrived at a new genre of film, but I don't know what to call it...maybe Psycho-Sexual. Whatever tag it ends up wearing, Zupko has crossed into a realm that is his alone. The "Mad Monk of Porn" is the undisputed ruler of his dark kingdom, he may even be the only inhabitant.

We've given Zupko's flicks good reviews and bad reviews, but one thing we've never said is that they're boring. Disturbing, yes, but never boring. This movie is his finest to date in terms of story and presentation but not for its eroticism. I've said it before and I'll say it again...this is Zupko's world, we just live in it!! I would strongly recommend seeing this movie. It's a unique piece of cinema that will be remembered as a milestone in his career.

PT says 5, the movie just overwhelms the sex.
